The book “Patterns in Art” is the result of our close encounter with the paintings of the old masters. It is an exploration in search of apparently secondary details — tiles, fabrics, tablecloths, and other decorative elements — which, to us, were revelations. We ‘stole’ patterns from over four centuries of art history: observing them, extracting them from paintings, and reassembling them in new forms. We then used them as narrative cues to talk about paintings in anthropological and social terms. This book represents the synthesis of our observation. Our project was made possible thanks to the generosity of those museums that use new digital media to make part of their collections and archives accessible online and available for commercial use.
